The City of Lom
For Bulgarians, the Danube River has always been more of an emotion than a rational concept. Its waters have been navigated by conquerors, revolutionaries, merchants, and emigrants. Along its banks, cities have been built that have brought European culture to our lands. The city of Lom is one of them.
In the years before the Liberation and up until the mid-20th century, Lom was always one of the most important Danube ports and the shortest route from Sofia to Vienna. Preserving the splendour of the past, Lom keeps its traditions, enriches the present, and confidently looks to the future.
"Almus," a Roman fortress that was part of the Danube Limes, is just one of the city's attractions. During the National Revival period, Lom was a cradle of enlightenment and culture. It hosted one of the first theatrical performances and had a cultural centre with deep traditions, a brewery, and a port. As a result of this cultural and economic boom, today we can enjoy the many houses in the "late Art Nouveau" style along the long and beautiful main street.
Dimităr Marinov, Krăstyu Pishurka, Nikola Părvanov, Tsvetan Todorov, Yana Yazova, and many other Revival figures, writers, and intellectuals bring fame to Lom as a city of free-spirited people.
